Michael Bishop has been living and working in Istanbul as a Fulbright Fellow for the past year. Well known for his studio and public practice, this is his first exhibition at the Skinner Howard Gallery. The work includes recent digital prints on Turkish industrial felt from his studio in Istanbul and sculpture new to Sacramento.
At first glance, the Istanbul prints on felt seem miles apart from his work in California - constructed 3-dimensional pictures and free standing sculpture, the most recent of which have powder coated matt surfaces on aluminum and cast bronze. The photo images on felt however, provide the same anti-reflective, light sucking surface as the powder coast, underscoring Bishop's ongoing interest to still the moment. While captured images used in both bodies of work flip from two dimensional in the felt work to three dimensional in the metal work, there is a fundamental consistency at play.
